I have often wondered about this. IMO it would depend on the route the bus does daily. If it's in town, flat and just stop to stop, I see no reason a gas engine wouldn't suffice. If it does highway mixed with inclines and rural areas, maybe a diesel would be better. I live near a school bus garage in a town that services two school districts. In anything colder than about 40 degrees, someone comes in and starts the buses an hour before they leave the yard....that can't be cheap on fuel.I am curious as to how many miles they rack up before they are retired, although I think a diesel would be cheaper in the long run with high miles I see a lot of school buses at auction with less than 100k.
