In National Parks and large cities I have seen a lot of CNG/hybrid buses. Modern diesel emission systems don't like to idle a lot so a lot of applications like ambulances and bucket trucks are getting away from them. It is clear to me that Ford's new 7.3 gas engine is specifically targeting this market. School buses really don't get driven that much, probably 4 to 5 hours a day around here and a lot of it is idling. With the frequent stops a hybrid system would make a lot of sense.
The UPS trucks in my area tried diesels for a while then went back to gas. The drivers that I have talked to like the gas engines much better and I would bet those trucks get driven twice as much as the average school bus.
