I'm seeing lots of gas engines on school buses, tow trucks and other commercial vehicles out here on the west coast. The whole "a diesel is good for 300K miles" is really an outdated thing. Sure, the engine will make it. But all of the emissions and a thousand other things will clog or fail long before that, and cost a bunch of $$$ to fix.
On the topic, I chatted with a big decision maker for our local public bus company and it was really interesting. These big companies really struggle with decisions because there is a lot of guesswork about which way things are going to go (fuel availability, technology reliability, etc.). Then, you get the public involved with their well meaning but often uneducated opinions and it really gets messy. For example, everyone just wants to see all the buses be electric thinking that is the end all but the batteries have plenty of environmental problems, the technology is expensive and building a bunch of charging stations all over town just isn't feasible. He really seemed to be leaning towards LNG but seemed to be having a hard time selling the well-meaning environmental group.
