I have removed the Atwood cooktop/oven combo from the camper (we never used the oven and I am installing drawers in the space) and will be installing just an Atwood gas cooktop. The gas line connects exactly the same way. My question is how do I correctly remove the gas line? In the picture you see a large nut and a smaller one. What is the proper way to unscrew this connection?

While holding the smaller fitting, unscrew the large tube nut.

Lefty loosey, righty tighty. As he said, you want to hold the small nut so the large nut spins off of it. If you were to turn it as it sits right now and not hold the small nut it may not loosen and would twist and collapse the soft copper line into a crumpled mess.When you are done carefully check all the connections with a soapy/water solution.If you move the small fitting to the other cook top be sure to use the correct pipe dope on the threads. If using tape, be sure it's rated for propane.

Hold the thin nut with a wrench and then turn the nut by the tubing counterclockwise.

Correct, hold the smaller fitting with a wrench, then use another wrench to loosen the larger nut. Multiple posts have said turn to the left; however if you are working from the top down onto the fittings and standing where you are for the photo then you would need to turn the larger wrench to the right.

Here is the area where the stove was removed and where the new cook top is going. There is a lot of room in there. I'm going to try and fit two drawers in that space below the cooktop.

I went the other way on our Rockwood. When we bought it in 2004, there was a fire at the oven thermostat plant that supplied all the RV oven manufacturers, so almost no trailers had ovens installed. A year after we bought the trailer oven/cooktops were again available and I removed our cooktop and replaced it with a cooktop/oven unit. The swap was super easy, the gas connection was in the same spot, only 4 screws needed to be removed to slide the cooktop out and then put the cooktop/oven in. Of course, I had to remove the doors and frame below the cooktop where the storage area was so the oven part would fit.

Make sure you don't throw away the brass adapter that the flare nut was screwed into. If I remember correctly, the new cooktop/oven didn't come with it, so I had to transfer it to the new unit. If you have to transfer the adapter, you will need some pipe joint compound or Teflon tape that is labeled for gas use.

I sure will. I'm just waiting for the cooktop to get in stock. I'll snap some pics of the stove, vent hood and microwave removed asap.

All depends on which way you are looking.

Regardless it is a right hand thread flare nut.

OK, so from a learning standpoint, tell us, is it a right hand thread or left hand thread?

There is a place on an older RV or gas grill where you could see a left hand thread. Propane tank fittings. POL VS Acme.
