It is all about speed.
On few short runs when my dually was on 35-45 mph highways, my cluster was showing 30 mpg.
That dropped drastically once you exceed 55 mph.
I went from 6200 ft to just over 9500 ft.
I've run my truck and camper at several different speeds for long distances and I get the best gas mileage cruising on the freeway with my cruise set at 70 mph.
Maybe it would be better cruising at 45 mph but I'll never know.
I spend part of my life in equipment hauling and weight makes bigger difference in city driving, where you stop and accelerate a lot.
At freeway driving my flatbed empty, or with 10,000lb on the bed would show marginal differences in fuel consumption.
Frontal area was counting a lot on other hand.
What is min speed your truck will hold the highest gear?
When each engine has it "sweat spot" for optimal performance, most of the time min speed at which transmission will hold overdrive is the best for mpg.
