I got a Black Bear tune for my Burb because I was sick of the non-existent throttle response and the soft shifts. GM calls it "torque management." Everything is tuned for mileage and comfort. That's not what I want.
Now, with the tune, the transmission shifts are firmer, throttle response is much improved, and I don't have to floor it to get the transmission to downshift. I don't have any delusions about making extra power, I just want the power I have to be used more effectively.
X2. Regardless of what others say, the competent tuners (Black Bear, 5star, Mike Troyer etc) do improve towing performance. Improved throttle response, better shifting and shift points and holding gears longer when needed all contribute to a better towing experience. The $500 +/- that a programmer and a set of custom tunes cost is not for everyone but the data logging, live engine monitoring and the ability to read and clear CELs make it worth it for many.
