I live near Detroit. Several of my friends are powertrain engineers for GM. I'd be happy to have one of them chime in as well.

And these are people that don't haul trailers and most are only pulling out 75% TM. Read the above to find out why.
BTW, TM has nothing to do with how hard or soft a tranny shifts. Anybody can program a tranny to shift as hard or soft as they want at full throttle. I could even do that with a T400 or 700R4.
IOW's OEM pulls throttle and timing out to stop breaking things and the soft shift is just a side benefit to the customer.
