I think if you really get down to the brass tacks of the situation and if you put the engine on a dyno and check out the BSFC you will find out an engine improves VERY, VERY, VERY little in F/E over time.
What does improve is how a person learns to drive the new truck or car.
Several stages of owning a new truck.
#1. Lets see what this puppy can do! This thing goes good!
#2. Lets tow with it sane like and if I have to floor it once in a while and waste a little fuel so be it.
#3. I'm over this power trip. I just want to get good fuel mileage.
The 3 steps above are what people are seeing with improvement in F/E over time.
Probably a little truth in that, though I have set the cruise on 62 every since the first five hundred miles. I do like to keep up with, or ahead of, traffic around town. I also found out I get better mileage without the ethanol, but that is hard to find in Illinois.
