If I just got done with a 5hr drive, I probably don't want to get in another vehicle and drive a couple more hours anyway. Plug in for the night and in the morning we are charged.
PS: Car following is already here. More like 10-20ft spacing but that will still get you a 30-50% reduction in power requirements. 10yr ago I was in a semi doing that on live freeways at a conference. Biggest holdup is liability concerns. They were focused on trucks as fuel is one of the largest costs for trucking companies but they also figured it would help with crash reductions.
Not wanting to drive more is not the same as can't.
One thing, as long a humans are driving distance between cars is needed to keep from banging together. But if cars could talk to each other, could run with less distance between. If accident happens it is better if the vehicles are running close together when snot hits the fan.
5hr drive in the RV is likely around 300miles. Assuming a 30-50% increase in range on a 300mile range EV...you likely have 50-100mile range left...so if it's just running up to the store or out to eat, 5 miles away, no big problem.
Still need distance with machines at the controls. 10-20ft spacing is incredibly close and gets most of the drafting effect. 4-5ft and the slightest mechanical discrepancy and you have a fender bender.
