I haven't "needed" one yet, but I'd really like one to open up my options for day trips. It will also improve the tailgating experience. I'd love to get the Honda 3000, but since it's more of a want than a need, I'm trying to find the best bang for the buck.
Based on the Smarter Tools and Champion deal at Costco, seems like I need to get a membership. Sams Club only ever has the big loud style generators.
If you will never use Cosco you can buy the generator online for a 5% non-member surcharge. Since there isn't a Costco near me, I nearly did just that for the Champion 3100.
But I already have a Yamaha ef2800i inverter generator that I picked up at a great price used so held off. The ef2800i is open frame but not all that loud. I kind of like it since it looks like any old contractor genny--yet it is small and light enough for me to lift myself. I got it for just $350 after setting a craigslist alert. Jumped right on it.
It'll start my 13.5k btu A/C with eco mode off. After the a/c has been on for a while I turn eco mode back on and it will restart the a/c. While the a/c is running it will even power the microwave. Little workhorse.
