Our first system was a 230w portable that while it got more tracking the sun, I could also leave it flat for weeks. We didn't have the inverter to run the microwave or coffee pot. TV was limited to a handful of movies a trip since we had no reception.
What it was enough for was running all of the basic trailer functions including a lot of furnace with sub freezing temps at night. We do conserve, the lights are LED, still that portable and a single GRP 27 battery was all we needed even with a few cloudy days.
So a few hundred watts should be enough for low power camping. I'd think hooking up the campers battery to the trucks alternator would be a good back up in place of a small generator.
I agree with up grading the battery now. No reason to pay and then replace.
