This subject should be a "sticky"..
Your BEST bet is a min of 3Kw.. That will give you the best chance that it will work..
I use a $250 4Kw Chinese Honda clone gen with no problems..
I will let the name brand owners tell you all the good things about spending $1000 or more for their "quieter" gens..

It's not a clone if it's NOISY.
My $1000 Honda doesn't disturb the neighbors if they can't hear it. As quiet as it is, I still direct it away from other campers.
My biggest peeve on my last summer's trip through 7 National Parks was the joker who ran his open frame contractors genny in the bed of his pickup to reverberate throughout the entire campground at 8am in the most amazing place at Glacier NP.
Yesterday as I was walking into one of our local big box stores I noticed an employee helping a customer load his brand new 3000 watt Champion open frame genset into the back of his truck and my instant thought was - "I hope this guy is a contractor and not a camper" - as I sure wouldn't want to be one of those within a 1/2 mile of that generator when it's running. :E
Gdetrailer is right about one thing, this discussion should be a sticky - to warn others who are tempted to buy one of these inexpensive open frame gensets with the intention of using them in any sort of organized campground about just how many others they're about to really tick off! :M
