In the beginning whenever I discussed solar and generators with honey, the first thing I heard was " will it run the air" So we started out with the generator first. Then while we used it for a season, I collected what I needed for a simple portable solar system. It proved that solar could meet our needs so now I'm collecting the bits and pieces to put twice as much on the roof.
One thing to know about generators is if you plan to go up in altitude, either go high enough to not need the Air or get a BIG generator. I camp between 9000 and 10.000 ft and not one of the big threes 2800w inverter generators have a sniff of a chance at running my air conditioner. They will loose between 30 and 40% of their power due to elevation and temperature up here turning them into very expensive battery chargers.
