Geo Washington & Jefferson Nat'l Forest

Anybody ever camped here?

We were gonna do Shenandoah but they seem to be all closed up because of the recent weather.

We're looking at Blowing Springs Campground in the Warm Springs VA area

  • Ranger Tim is spot on. The upper part of Blowing Spring is all wooded, the lower part is basically a field. Nice trail along the stream which is stocked with trout. You may also want to consider the nearby Hidden Valley Campground. Jackson river is adjacent and also stocked with trout. Nearby is a mansion where the movie Somersby was filmed, beautiful area and lots of easy trails. Like Tim says, beware of hunters. PM me if you need more info, I'm very familiar with that area.

  • Excellent camping all winter at Lake Moomaw, Hot Springs area. After Dec. 1 it becomes primitive with vault toilets, water less available, but a marina on the lake stays open a while. Call the ranger district and get info. They once plowed a road all the way in to a site for me in January - great folks! This time of year you will be sharing the national forest with hunters, so be aware of that and take orange wearables if you intend to do much exploring. I believe the name of the campground that's open in winter is McClintoc Point, a group camping area during the summer season. Bolar Flat closes some time in early December?

Lots of Forest Service CG's in that area that stay open to hunters. Check with Douthat State Park as well.
