If you want a very capable truck and plan on putting a lot of miles on it, give serious consideration to a diesel engine. You'll get much better mileage, better torque, and a longer lasting engine and higher trade in values. On the down side, it is a much more expensive initial purchase, and oil changes are more expensive. On my ford F350, I get 19mpg on the highway, 14 in town, and 10.5 while towing 13,000 pounds.
You must drive slower than my father on freeway! I have NEVER gotten over 17mpg from my 6.7, that was driving with cruise set to 65mph. Im not complaining as I do average 16.5 on my daily commute.
I failed to mention that it was downhill both ways with a tail wind! ;-)
I have no clue why. And when I'm not towing, I'm closer to 70. I'm heading out for a four day trip to Salt Lake later today. I'll check it again.

I know this is now off topic based upon what the OP has recently posted, but just wanted to follow up on the discussion. I just got back from SLC. Overall average was 18.5 mpg (calculated and trip computer matched). I was driving 80mph in Utah, and 75 in AZ. Keep in mind there are very serious hills many places on this route, especially between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
So I'll stick by my 19 mpg on flat highways (Midwest) and driving at 70-75mph.
