The only State Park in Indiana we've been to in 30 years of camping that was less than desirable was O'Bannon Woods State Park. Why? Because they let everyone hook up full time to the only single water spigot with the Y adaptors, until that last person didn't put another Y on. (That's when I unscrewed them all and got my water and left all those hoses on the ground.) And they let the horses from the riding stables ride and walk right through the campground where it specifically says, No horses in campground!
Every other State Park has been great in my opinion. Granted, the campgrounds themselves are getting bigger and bigger as the demand for more and more people wanting to camp increases. As always, when people are crowded into a small space, they end up doing stupid things.
Other than O'Bannon, the DNR has always been great responding when we've called them complaining about loud, unruly campers. But for the most part, everyone is pretty civilized. We avoid all camping on 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. Those 3 days do bring out the nut cases!
We have been to EVERY state park in Indiana and every State Recreation area and have enjoyed every one of them and not had problems with fellow campers to make any kind of fuss over in several years now.
No, boaters on the lakes are just plain dangerous. We have a canoe and we go only to parks are recreation areas that support non-motorized or idle speed water craft only.
Also, this time of year is some of the best camping. We are going to Versaills. We made a reservation. We are the ONLY one reserved in the entire end of that section of the campground (at this point in time anyway).
It's all a matter of where you go and when you go.
But, in many ways, I do have to agree with you. We live in the country where it really is quiet, corn field behind the house, bean field in front of the house, live on a county road, have neighbors on adjoining properties, no fences, dogs run free, and we burn our own trash and pee in the yard. (who's going to see you?)
We park our camper at home, enjoy the quiet, solitude, have our own fire pit and our own toys. It's country living and yes, we sleep in the camper almost every single night from late February all the way through December. So you know, going to a State Park where the next campsite is 40 feet from your front door, ... well ... you know ... that does kind of suck!
When are you going to Versailles? We will be there the 7th 8th and 9th of October
