If possible, I would recommend installing them offset to the non-hinge side of the door opening.
After reading your post I went out and measured our GlowSteps. They are the same size as yours. We completed a 21 day camping trip in early November using these steps. I can honestly say that it never crossed my mind that they were more narrow than the original steps or that they were too narrow. I just read your post to my wife and she never noticed it either. They are far superior to the original steps in my humble opinion.
