Bought my last 2 like that. One GM (Suburban) and one Ford Focus RS hatchback. Both off lease, both still under factory warranty and both got the MFG extended warranties applied and in both cases, I quick check with GM and Ford yielded the original owners name and service records and I've had no issues with either.
My take is, let a lessor take the depreciation. Got the Focus for half sticker and the Burb for about 60% sticker.
I will only buy an off lease vehicle but it has to be below the standard factory warranty cut off mileage.
