I believe GM would only be on the hook for any issues you had with the misinformation not any consequential problems with what you bought to use with it. They are definitely not going to give you any money for a trailer switch.
I have a GM car with the faulty ignition switch recall. The fix is to put an insert in the key guard so a larger key ring can't be used. The GM technicians were laughing amongst themselves about it the last time I was in their shop. Even after many deaths, the cheap bastards aren't willing to replace the lock cylinder.
