Not that it excuses GM, but I have seen the warning about lower tow limits with the 3.08 axle ratio in their brochures and in the towing guide at in the salesroom. My 2013 Silverado 1500 owner's manual lists a maximum tow rating of 6,600 for vehicles with the 5.3 V-8 and 3.08 gears.
