To say I would be annoyed if I found out I had lost 2000 lbs. of towing capacity would be an understatement.
My opinion is, if you were happy with the performance and handling of the TT and TV combination, in the short term it is only a paper loss. You were happy before you got the letter. Certainly if you do a lot of towing you will want a new TT or TV.
I would think that if you look at the max cargo or payload rating for your half ton, with a 7,000 lb. plus TT you were most likely over the max cargo limit when loaded. Generally over about 5000 lbs. you need a ¾ ton to stay within the payload limit.
I have to agree with you that at this point you are on the short end of the stick, if the dealer will not change out the rear end, or make you a special deal on a new TV.
Trying to sue without a class action suit or asking for a partial reimbursement on a new TTl probably will not go very far.
I would take a hard look at the Max cargo limit then decide if changing out the rear end is worth the hassle. It might void your warranty but we already know what that is worth.
