30 years in the Carpenters union. Retired with a full pension at 56.
People jump to too many wrong conclusions about unions.
1st off not all unions are equal. And no they haven't outlived their usefulness.
Over the years I worked on mostly commercial projects and came in contact with union members of other trades. What I found was that within every trade union you had your radicals and they took advantage of their union.
Trade unions provide on the job training and a good wage plus benefits. You don't get that in the nonunion trades.
My union went on strike several times in the 30 years I worked. We never did anything to disrupt other trades from crossing the picket line. It was an honor system.
We also took pay cuts when our contract was up during recessions. All contract negotiations were done in an orderly manor and both sides got a fair deal.
IMO I feel that the UAW are taking advantage of auto makers and are asking for too much most of the time. I don't know the full details of their contract but there seems to be some pretty good conditions afforded workers.
BTW all the companies I worked for could opt out of the union when they wanted. But they knew they couldn't get the quality help from an ad in the paper.
