I always just saw that as a marketing ploy.
Perhaps it's just me, but I'd be shocked to find a modern vehicle model that can't make it to 100K miles 99 out of 100 vehicles. I haven't owned a vehicle yet that hasn't gone well into the 100K territory without a single issue from the drivetrain.
