GM 's perceived quality was poor for a time. Now after successful marketing and actual improvements, they have a much better image.
I almost find it laughable that you suggest GM has a much better image. In 2014 GM issued a RECORD number of vehicle recalls. Over 28 MILLION GM vehicles were recalled in 2014. That is hardly representative of improving quality and a better image.
Your post seemed to suggest that because GM is a much better company that they don't need a warranty for their products.
Lexus and Toyota offer the same basic warranty. Both products are generally accepted to be high quality products. Toyota had a little hiccup with the "unintended acceleration" nonsense that eventually was determined to be driver error. Some might see a conspiracy theory that at a time when the US government owns GM that the US government launches a bogus witchhunt against a very reliable and highly profitable foreign company... only to quietly concede that the deaths were all attributable to driver error.
Regardless of all that, people think of Toyota and Honda as a quality product. That is a reputation that has been built over 10+ years of dedication to quality and reliability. The fact that GM recalls are under 10 million this year does NOT mean that suddenly the product is better and more reliable.
I don't believe your theory that its higher quality. It seems more likely that other theories, too many repairs over 60K miles, hold more water.
I don't see it as a bad thing though... They are offering a warranty comparable to Ford's warranty. That doesn't admit that they have an inferior product, it simply admits that cost is considered with warranty issues and they don't feel the need to offer a warranty that is superior to Ford. Maybe market research has indicated that brand loyalty (we never see that on RV.net...) is more important to customers than a longer warranty.
