Well ib516...my fellow Canadian ;).... we're going to see a lot more recalls from all the manufacturers. Just awhile ago...March 2014, Toyota was assessed a fine of $ 1.1 Billion for how they handled a recall, regarding vehicles that were to be recalled.
The exact info can be seen here in this link.
Toyota fined $ 1,1 Billion
GM appears to be not leaving any stone unturned when it comes to vehicle issues. Partly I would say because the prospect of a large fine...and now I believe...correct me if I'm wrong....the possibility of criminal penalties... hovers over...ALL... those automotive manufacturers, who do not quickly and thoroughly respond to fixing vehicle issues.
I quote from attached article in the link:
"Some safety watchdogs were impressed. The settlement (Toyota- my insert...Les)) "is a game changer," said Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety. "Until today, automakers faced insignificant fines and no criminal penalties under the Vehicle Safety Act."
The federal criminal probe — spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney's office and FBI in New York — was independent of federal safety regulator and congressional probes of the Toyota sudden-acceleration recalls. It looked at whether Toyota provided false or incomplete statements to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the events leading to recalls for floor mats that could trap gas pedals and gas pedals that could stick."
I would say ALL manufacturers will....strike that word and insert 'must'.... follow the same process as GM has done, due to the fact that the U.S. Govt...and or it's agency (s) is playing hardball.
This is not a bad thing, IMO. It is about consumer protection...and it is motivation to.... ALL.... manufacturers to ensure they get it ....right...the first time.
Mark my words and remember where you heard it first. Vehicle recalls over the next few years +/-....will increase.....and....they will come from ...ALL...manufacturers.
Ford, Mopar, Toyota, Nissan, Honda....and yes....GM.
In today's climate of significant fines to manufacturers and the constant flow of information available to consumers....modern manufacturers have no choice.
I printed the word ...ALL...in upper case purely for emphasis. This is an issue that affects ....ALL...automotive manufacturers.
The issue is not about particular manufactures...it's about ALL manufacturers and the penalties they may face if they do not comply with regulations in a timely and thorough manner.
Unfortunately there will be brand loyalist...or those who just wish to stir the pot....who will jump on GM....on Ford....on Toyota...on Mopar...et al...and use the recall as an opportunity to denigrate the brand that they seem to regard as the enemy.
It's not about....'my mother is better than yours'...level of arguments that these threads seem to stimulate.
But unfortunately that is what will unfold....as surely as the sun will set this evening.
Let the brand loyalist games proceed.
