GMC integrated brake controller and hydraulic trailer brakes

Hi all: considering a GMC 3500 HD DRW. My current 5er has the Titan hydraulic disc brake system, which requires my Prodigy P3 brake controller to be set in the hydraulic over electric mode. My question has to do with the integrated brake controller on the GM HD trucks. Will the integrated brake controller work with hydraulic disc trailer brakes?
  • Yes the IBC will work with your Titan pump, just need an adapter that is wired in parallel with the pump. It tricks the IBC connection sensing circuit. Really, an old brake magnet will do the same thing I understand if you need to save a few $$.
  • Depends on the year your truck is. The early ones had to have the adapter as Larry said. The newer ones it is a setting in the truck. I think that it was 14 that made the change but don't hold me to that.

2015 and newer HD trucks have hydraulic over electric support from the factory.

If yours is 2014 or prior, the problem is the integrated controller doesn't sense the electric over hydraulic actuator and so it never senses a trailer is connected and thus never activates the trailer brakes.

You can get it working by wiring a regular electric brake magnet in parallel with the actuator -- this will fool the truck's integrated brake controller into operating as if there was an electric system on there.

See here for an example solution..
  • Ok. Should have clarified. this pertains to 2018 model.
  • On your 2018 just check the owners manual for the set up procedure for the IBC. It will walk you thru the set up.
  • With newer GMs the computer sets the IBC to the correct set-up, nothing you need to do other than hook-up and tow.

Yep, Just made this mod couple months ago. Just hook up and tow, making sure to adjust your gain for the new rig
