3.42 gears with the 6 speed work fine. Our trailer is 6600 lb and the truck tows it over the mountains just fine. The RPM's are up at times but that is no problem. My 2012 is better with the current trailer than the 2003 Silverado was towing a lighter trailer with the 3.73 gears and the 4 spd.
