Going down to 4 above on Monday

We just came back from ten days at Ocholockonee State Park in Florida (where we met delightful Miss Lizzie). We intended to stop one night at Laura Walker SP on our way home, but were worried about the predicted low temps at home. We needn't have worried, however, it didn't even freeze. Sometimes I think some of these weather forecasts are as much guesswork as they are science. Still you have to prepare, they might be right!

Not many would believe that Tennessee has had a lower recorded temperature than Michigan... - 30ºF and that was in the last 30 years. We anticipate -1ºF this time... all of the brass monkeys have gone south.

Stay safe when you are up there cleaning off the roof of the camper.

That's a cool state park. Last time we were there we saw a black bear near the cg.

Thanks Sleepy; I used to live in S ind too. Sometimes those cold fronts would push down and it was colder there than here. The lakes help moderate our temps but thats why we get so much snow. Sounds like we are all going to suffer a little for a few days here. I do not enjoy climbing up on that roof. I take my cell phone as I live alone. Thats a lot of weight up there plus when it melts all that moisture just slowly dripping off seems like a bad situation. I have a tarp but sometimes the tarp gets a rip from a sharp edge and all that pressure. I can get most of it off a ladder. Take care, stay warm and happy new years as well.

In Sept I trailered my harley to Townsend. Stayed in the camper and road every day for 5 days. Rained a lot one day. It was a great trip. I really enjoyed the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'll be back.

Sorry for the delay in replying as we were gone about all day today and just got home about an hour ago.

Today's post from you explains why you have so much snow on your TC but if you have 24" in your yard, it's a drifted area as we were in Allendale on M-45 and N.Cedar by the gravel pits area this afternoon which is close to you and they only had 6" to 8" max on the ground at around 3PM. Yes, it's so true that because our winds come over Lake Michigan from the westerly direction, the east side of about any structure or a dense woods, there will be much deeper snow deposits due to blowing, drifting, or dumping snow. However, that's not a true measure of how much snow is on the ground as an average.

Yesterday we were gone most of the day because we were in downtown GH in the stores and a restaurant and there's not a bit of snow on the street or the sidewalks there. Ha ha, the streets and sidewalk downtown are heated as you know. Of course, we had to stop at Meijer like about everyone else does but not until about 8:30pm. Meijer was jammed full all day as our daughter went there around 2PM and they had to park way out by the service drive. She'd called and told us to stay away until at night som we did but what a surprise! The very first time since 1958 I've seen Meijer shelves less than half full with many shelves totally bare. The manager "Jim" said the store was full of people since about 8 in the morning with people stocking up because of the forecasts. He said he called in all the help he could get but they couldn't even keep up! Took us nearly an hour to check out!

When we got home and I read your first post last night about having so much snow, I took a yard stick out and checked the snow depth in 4 places on level ground and the depth varied from 3-3/4" to 4-1/4". 2 checks in the front and 2 in the back. One on a concrete never cleared walkway and 3 in the grass areas down to the dirt. 4" is a long way from 24".

Went out again after the snow we had today when we got home and it's now as of about 5:30pm 5" to 5-1/2" in the same places. Drove thru downtown and took Harbor drive passed the State Park on the way back home today and there's about the same snow depth we have on our land. Downtown has only wet streets like it had rained but the sidewalks were totally dry.

That's why your numbers you posted last night didn't make sense. Guess you might live in a magical snowfall little localized area! Then again, most of the snow this winter has been well south or southeast of us as is the bitter cold temps. Thank you Lake Michigan!

It's 21.6 F here at our home at 7;19pm and cold as H3ll on the other side of Lake Michigan as usual!

BTW, it's supposed to go down to +11 F for a low here tonight. Hard to believe but they closed Grand Valley State University in Allendale for tomorrow and all the schools around here also. 25,000 college student alone at that one university and there's 13 other colleges and universities right in our area. That's a lot of kids with nothing to do as tomorrow is the first day of the new semester. Bet there'll be a lot of parties going on!

Darn, I feel cheated as I went to schools here all the way thru 12th grade and never had even ONE snow day. Now retired, everyday could be a snow day and I still wouldn't have a day off retirement or school! Some kids get all the luck!

WOW! Just looked and it's -15.3 F over in Wisconsin 100 miles across the lake on the west side of Lake Michigan and -8.7 F in Indianapolis, IN 258 miles south while it's a balmy +5.8 F presently here in Grand Haven, MI on the East side of Lake Michigan at 11 am Monday morning 1/6/13. What a dufference! I could just give Lake Michigan a big kiss if I wasn't to darn lazy to walk out over the shore ice to do it! Maybe a "Thank You" ecard sent will suffice?

BTW, got 3" more inches of snow here since midnight. Probably going to have to blow off the driveway again and where the street snowplow throws it's stuff on the end but my wife says NOT TODAY! At least they have the streets plowed very well around here so you can see the Asphalt/pavement.

No doubt about it: With the wind at 20-30 mph in Wisconsin, -15 F with a 20-30 mph winds is mighty cold! Wind's only 4-7 mph here and it's much warmer in actual air temps.
