One last comment when you get over the Throgs and into the Bronx, as you approach the GWB the road splits, lower level to the right, upper level to the left. At one point they were making all trucks take the lower level, if that's the case then be advised to stay to the right as you approach that split. When the traffic is tight on the Cross Bronx it's almost impossible to change lanes pulling a TT, folks just don't let you in. We left NY in 2011, gcloss can confirm if GWB is still lower level only for trucks.
Storing TT off of LI is an interesting idea, if you never camp on LI...we used to enjoy the short weekend trips to the beach or to the Suffolk County parks. Indian Island was a favorite.
Another option if you are headed up to New England (I know OP is going to PA, this is FYI for other LIers) is to take the Orient Point Ferry to New London. We did that once or twice with the 32' TT in my sig pic....not cheap, but what a relaxing way to go.
