When working with brass gas fittings, what I like to is wrap male threads with teflon tape and then apply teflon pipe dope. This insures a good seal and the female fitting will thread on easily. I tighten until just past snug, not like I am fastening a wheel to an axle or a bolt on the hitch--moderate pressure, unlike King Kong. When all is tightened, I will go back and spray all fittings with soapy water. If something is bubbling, I can go back and retighten, spray again, and make sure there is no leak.
