It is definately regional. LOTS of 2WD here is SoCal. When looking for our Expedition EL 4x4 was a requirement. The one we found was a left over, had been on the dealers lot long enough it had a dead battery and was boxed in. They couldn't believe I actually WANTED a 4x4 XLT, especially when gas just hit $4. I got a pretty good deal that day.
Don't use it often, but it does occasionally come in handy. Most recently used it to get around a jack knifed big rig. He had lost traction on a slick curved transition and ended up blocking the entire transition, literally 60 seconds in front of us, we were the 2nd car. It was 11:30 with an hour of driving to go, I had to get up at 5 the next day, kids asleep in the back, raining. Driver was fine, but it would be a long while before a big rig tow. A 4x4 truck behind us drove up and around the dirt / mud berm and got around the truck. Then a second 4x4. I followed suit. No way was I going to sit for hours if I didn't have to. Thank you 4WD!
