"What does the door jam sticker say?"
^^^ EXACTLY!!! Vehicles are built differently, and all with the same name are not capable of the same tasks. Your vehicle may have all the towing equipment from the factory, which makes a big difference.
As mentioned, also look at your Jeep's Cargo Capacity, on the door jamb. My Grand Cherokee had 1,060 cargo capacity, and our trailer tongue wt plus WDH was about 725 lbs. Add 300 lbs to that for DW and I, and we had 35 lbs left for cargo. Not enough to take a grandkid along!
And for the trailer, look at the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of the trailer, and use that for your shopping. Some trailers have 1,500 lbs of cargo capacity, some have 600 lbs for cargo. You may think you pack "light", but if you only have room for 600 lbs of water, food, bedding, and utensils, that goes fast.
Even using the 70% rule-of-thumb for tow capacity, my 2014 Grand Cherokee diesel, rated to tow 7,200 bs, could not tow my 5,600 lb (scale weight) trailer up a 9% grade faster than 35 mph. Got rid of it, and got a truck. Really would have preferred to keep the GC, but it couldn't do what it was advertised to do.
Good luck in your shopping!
