Grand Staircase Escalante at the end of March

Planning 7 days in the Grand Staircase at the end of March and wondering if the entire section of hole in the rock road is do able with a TC. Anyone been all the way to the end? Any other roads to consider? We did burr trail and cottonwood road last year. Also looking at calf creek, we drove by there twice and always wanted to stop camp and hike to the falls.

Thanks in advance.

  • Anutami, did that young fellow go swimming in that cold water?? Wow! Very tough person!
  • O.K. people! The drool factor is getting a little messy on this end. Last there in 1976. It looks better now.

  • Wish we could have met up. This is my view outside my window in a remote boondocking spot near Escalante.

Thanks for the pic! We made it all they way :)

  • You shouldn't have any issues with getting in there for that time table. Only you know really what you and your rig is capable of. What you should be aware of, is the time of season you are chosing is typically the rainy season. While these storms will be brief and fast moving. Be prepared for the roads/trails changing a 180* from accessible to a road that seems to be greased. Be prepared to be stopped for a day or two, before the roads are passable again. Things usually become more stable, weather wise, May through October.

Certainly worth the visit, but be properly prepared as there will be few people around to help, when needed.

  • About 20 miles in the road became too washboarded for us to continue. Hells Backbone was a nice loop, with a couple of campgrounds.

  • All I can tell you is that the road was almost too good in 2011. My trip started here.
  • DW and I made the Calf Creek hike about a year ago. An easy 3 mile to the falls on a well-marked trail. Well worth the hike.
