The new ones are the same.
Yes they are a pain. Ive destroyed a couple needle fittings.
My 07 has no front axle disconnect or locking hubs so the shaft is always spinning.
I've greased it all of about 3x since new and at 150kmi the front driveshaft is still in good shape.
IMO if you hit it every 30-50kmi it's probably fine.
