I don't care if people do or not either...I'm just know that I've towed several things for more than a decade with never an issue. I don't know, is it because my trailers have all been relatively light? or was I on the verge of disaster and didn't know it?
YES, the lighter the trailer the LESS wear which will occur.
Simply put a 1000 lb trailer will cause much less wear to the ball and hitch than say a 10,000 lb trailer.
That is why you might get away not greasing the hitch and ball with a light trailer.
Don't do that with a heavier trailer unless you don't mind the sudden unexpected loss of your trailer when the hitch and ball get worn enough to pop out.
I bought a new 10K utility trailer a few years back, took a couple GOOD greasing sessions to rid that hitch of the GRINDING noise under load.
Simply put greasing it saves wear and tear, YES, it can be messy but I simply place a free plastic grocery bag over the ball then remove the hitch from the vehicle. Store it with the bag on.
I simply then put the hitch back on the vehicle and remove and discard the bag. Cheap but yet effective.
