Fransesca - I'd be worried about what you can't see on this vehicle. You got 'lucky' this broke so soon after you bought it, and in that case, the seller might feel some responsibility.
But, if the transmission ate it so quickly, for whatever reason, I'd be worried about other components of this vehicle too. How well was it maintained? And, if the fluid plug was out, who knows how long (doesn't matter ... it killed it). But it speaks to the upkeep in general.
I'm betting that plug was gone a while - and then it sat on the wholesale lot, and sat on the dealer lot - not in an of itself a bad thing - but everyone missed it. That stick tranny will run quite a while before it dissolves the gears (a stick will, and automatic not) ... so it tells me someone didn't take care of it.
You say these are hard to find ... probably true, I have no clue, but I'd sure have another good mechanic look over everything before I'd accept it again. At least depending on what options you have (you demand) and how hard you want to push it.
Used vehicles are always a c---p shoot, but well worth it if you get a good one. OR, if you can put a few bucks in and make it a good one.
