That's to be assumed, I'm sure. But the salvage price is only $4K less than replacement. As long as the trailer is functional and we can use it for the next 5 years or so, we will have got our $4K value out of it. Then I could sell it for whatever I could get and call that a bonus.
So the only real concern is that there is hidden damage and I find this out later, but I would still have my $12K salvage so worst case only out $4K (less whatever I could sell the trailer for if it was damaged beyond what I would/could repair myself). I think that is worth the gamble unless someone has a story that may make me rethink this.
