hey nutz,
Marketing hype can go BOTH ways here. I remember being at the dmax factory, I asked a supposide engineer how steep a grade I could pull with an 01/02 dmax, since I was there on sept 7, 01, he told me it was amtn climber.......hmmmmm....I rattled off I was told my 89 r3500 chassis cab with a 454/th400/4.10s was a mtn climber, yet it stalled at gvwr on an upper teen % grade. He then said after a foot shuffle or two or three. that was a gas rig, not a D/A combo....well anyway, never did get an answer out of him.
He was also the one in front of a number of us in the cafeteria saying "under NO circumstances" should one put 265-75-16 rubber on there 2500HD, or the puters would go haywire, as would the ally tranny.......hmmmmmmm.... so what did GM put n the new 3500SW rig intorduced two yrs later.....yep, them 265-75-16 rubber that would make things go haywire..........I kid you not!
So with all this baloney and non sensical typing by me........I believe NO ONE on there claims of what a rig will do ever since. Oh by the way....my 96 65td with a emanual 5sp, would pull 20K up a 30% grade without stalling......a D/A from that time period. maybe 22-23% up a 30% grade, yet it had what 8000 someodd more gcwr thanmy lowly 6.5 deezal. BUT, said D/A would go 55+ up a 3% grade where my 6.5 would be about 35mph. Amazing what 120hp will do for one eh!
Do I trust tow ratings. not on yours or my life!
