Happy medium between comfort and good gas mileage to haul?

You know, there is so much talk about what can my vehicle tow, and how much weight can I pull.

I think some emphasis should be more on: CAN I STOP?

I see old pictures of heavy old travel trailers being hauled around by sedans back in the the day, and I know someone who pulls a 25' AirStream w/ a Cadillac (w/ suicide doors yet!)

Neither of which I condone.

It's not how much you can pull, but it's how safely can I stop?
