hardside popup tow vehicle

For those that own a hardside popup (AFrame style), do you feel a minivan is capable of towing an AFrame hardside (2,000 lb. dry wt.) over many miles? Just 2 adults in the minivan with typical supplies? For those who have towed with a minivan, did you add a tranny cooler, or need to add a load equalizer hitch or anti sway device?
Thanks for your advice

  • Hardside or softside will tow about the same with the top down; I assume you don't want to tow with the top up! :D A minivan with 3500 lb tow rating should handle it fine. With the low profile of the popup, wind resistance (the usual big factor at highway speed) is minimized. Weight will kick in if you tow up a grade, but just slow down and take it easy.

I did have an extra tranny cooler on my '96 Windstar V6 when I towed a Starcraft popup one summer, from OK to ID and back. We even towed over the steep pass W. of Jackson Hole. As for my Highlander towing the Aliner, the HL already had extra cooling from the factory. If you have any doubts, try to monitor trans temps with a Scanguage or some other OBD device.
  • Not a hard sided pop-up, but a soft sided pop-up. It towed our Starcraft Venture for 6 years. After we got a surburban and a hard sided travel trailer, the mini-van ran for many, many more years before the air-conditioner when dead, and couldn't get it fixed. We sold it "cash for clunkers". But the engine, transmission, and drive train were still solid as could be, and still got 24 mph. I didn't want to trade it, but with windows that really did not open in the back, and no air conditioning, it was a heart-attack waiting to happen. (Chevy Lumina mini-van) (But, do they make vehicles as strong today as they did back then?)

  • what is the mini van rated to tow? does it have a towing package? my Highlander is rated for 5,000 lbs. with towing package, 2,000 without it.
