I've done it because one of our car haulers tongue jacks wouldn't clear my cargo box and spare tire on the back bumper. It towed fine.
Beware the tongue weight load increases when using an extension, so you can probably only do this if you have a Class 5 receiver installed. Some of the extensions tell you how much of a multiplier to use. If not, I would go with a 3x multiplier on what looks like a 12" extension?
