I found the reduced road illumination was not the issue, it was the glare from my headlights reflecting off the rims that caused nearly complete blindness at night. A half a block test drive was enough to decide to use a utility trailer instead. Even if you plan to travel only during the daylight hours, plans are always subject to change.
For one trip, I mounted Yakima bars and mounts on the boat we trailered so the bikes could come too.
