Coming from 5er I doubt you will wish for a "small" TC.
A non-slide can be fine for 2...you will lack floor space though, you really can only stand up 1 at a time...literally.
Going to just a single slide makes a huge difference in floor space and "useability".
You have plenty of truck, I think you will really like the 116DS and you will find it way more convenient to travel with than a 5er.
In terms of driveability, you will only be limited by your truck size (450) not by the TC you put on it.Unless you start talking very small pop up TC's...that is quite a bit different than any hardside. Once you go hard side...the difference in size vs maneuverability becomes negligible.
