How much do I need to take apart to clean? Is it normal to have a brick next to the heater? The brick was there when I pulled the heater.

No the brick is not normal. I would consider replacing, that's what I did with an old one of a similar type. I installed an Olympic CAT heater (8100ET, no longer made)
