With your Cummins there is an easy way.
#1 Plug in your block heater. Even in the sub zero weather I've had lately, the block heater significantly reduces the time it takes to get to operating temperature. I put mine on a 15amp outdoor timer and have it set to come on at 4AM. That gives me about 3 1/2 hours of heating time. The other benefit is starting is a snap and I usually don't need to use the heater grid either.
#2 Use the built-in warm up feature. I claim to be no expert as I just learned this last night while browsing youtube and came across a video titled
Fastest Way to Warm Up Your Cummins. While idling, the process involves turning on your exhasut brake, turn on cruise control, then press Set. This will raise idle speed to 1,000 RPM. I tried it this morning and it worked like a charm.
