You keep mentioning "the pilot" but there is no pilot, this is a DSI (Direct Spark Ignition) furnace. With gas at the correct pressure and 12 vdc available the furnace should start automatically by simply turning the thermostat to ON and setting the temperature threshold. Just because the previous owner says it does work doesn't mean it's so ... there could be any one of a number of issues preventing correct operation so rather than fool with something you clearly don't understand I'd suggest you have a qualified tech take a look.
