Hi Jason,
Welcome to the forum.
"Expandables" or "Hybrid Travel Trailers" are hardsided trailers that have beds that extend out the end. Note there is a forum here for those owners RV.net Hybrid Travel Trailers Forum
Keep an eye on craigslist - all winter long. You might find a used trailer from a private seller that gets posted that would work for you.
If you get a travel trailer I recommend you get one with a slide out if you can.
If you can visit an RV show in your area you will be able to walk through dozens of new trailers which will get you the chance to see and experience lots of floor plans in person. You can even try laying down in various beds with different configurations to see what works for you. Bring the kids, make a day of it and see what it is like for all 4 of you to sit, walk and use different floor plans that are in different trailers.
South Carolina RV Shows
Once you get an idea of the floorplan and the type trailer you think would work, then you can look for a used one that is right for you.
Oh, and you have to learn about towing capacity for whatever you would tow it with. There is a Towing forum for that topic also to help keep you and your family in a safe towing configuration.
Anyway, lots to learn. Have fun. You can learn a lot from reading this forum and asking questions.
