Hello, I am new.

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I'm buying a 1996 B2500 Dodge Ram Van that I will be converting to an RV.

I will be mounting an A/C inside the van, using an insulated box connected to the van's wall and the outside of the van wall cut out. Louvers and screen will allow the removed heat to escape instead of being blown back inside. A drain tube will be cut through the floor to allow moisture to escape. The A/C will use 465 watts of power.

I have heard all kinds of things regarding the size and number of batteries I need to power the A/C for up to 8 hrs in a day. It will be the only appliance using the battery bank.

I have asked on other forums how many batteries, 6 Volt vs 12 volt, ah and other questions. To date, I have received interesting answers:

1. Forget using an ac and dump your pet. Not gonna happen.
2. Forget solar and batteries; the AC takes too much power- get a fuel-powered generator. Fuel and a generator inside the van, even with the exhaust pipe directed through the floor to the outside isn't gonna happen. Don't wanna be inside a van with propane tanks.
3. You wanna WAT??heehehehehehe. If you can't understand the question, don't try to answer it.

So my question, after a long explanation is this. I plan to use 6 volt batteries. Assuming sunny days and the A/C cycling on and off for up to 8 hrs in a day, how many ah would I need, what type of solar charging setup would I need and possibly the size of the charge controller? I already have a 2500 watt inverter.

Thanks so much for your help. It's much appreciated.

  • INVERTERS change DC to AC.

They are very good at powering a low amp AC item for a long time. AKA TV/SAT/DVR etc.

They are very good at powering a high amp AC item for a very short period. AKA Microwave/hair dryer/toaster etc.

They are NOT very good at powering a high amp AC item for a long time.

    Get a RV generator!!!!

BTW I have two inverters. Boat and 5th wheel. The little Freedom 10 in the trailer has been in two boats and two RV trailers starting in 1991 on a 29' SeaRay.

  • Look up a fellow member named "Pianotuna". He's really up to date with batteries and such. He'll tell you why it won't work :W
  • Not gunna happen.

Well, unless you haul a whole trailer of batteries in back of your van. I guess you could make it work then?

I'll let someone else do the math to show you why.
  • never heard of running a ac off batteries,, it just pulls to meny amps, you,d need a giant converter also, ac,runs off ac current.
