The diesel in the Jeep is the preferred engine for towing over the 5.7 Hemi V8 in Australia. The Hemi is a performance engine, not a great towing engine.
The Hemi makes far more wheel torque at 4500rpm than the diesel at 2000rpm if going the same vehicle speed. Many people do not like how the gas engine sounds at 4500rpm, but I assure you the Hemi would be quicker to accelerate if kept over 3000rpm. You are right, it is the performance engine, even for towing. Otherwise, it would not be used in 1-ton trucks with tow ratings of 14k pounds. It will use a lot more fuel than the diesel!
