Hopefully it will do well for them. But as an owner of both a diesel and a gas engine, I'll pass.
Not sure what it is but as a daily driver, I always prefer my F250 gas truck versus the diesel. Only time I break out the diesel is for big work jobs and pulling the camper. Somehow, the gas truck is just easier to deal with around town. Not exactly sure why, just is.
I agree. I keep the diesels parked unless there is something tied to the back of them. I also prefer to run around in the gas truck.
This could be a real cool niche for Ram but it has to be navigated carefully.
The biggest reason I think guys would buy this is primarily for light truck capability with excellent mpg. I am not sure mid to high 20's is enough. I think its going to have to be at or above 30 mpg given the price of diesel and premium this engine will bring. I see this engine or anyones small pickup diesel to cost at about 80% of the cost of the HD version. So if its a $5K option added to what will surly have to be a robust version of the 1500 chassis that will add cost and weight to the vehicle. If it lands at somewhere around 450 foot pounds thats a lot power (the LB7 Duramax had 520) and will require practically 2500 type running gear.
If Ram can make the pickup economical to drive, decent towing capacity (but in my view not nearly as big of a deal as mpg and $), and still price it to make it worth buying (as opposed to just buying a 2500), I think it could be a great deal if this is the type of vehicle your looking for.
If the cost is too high, and the mpg not significantly better than a 2500, I dont see it selling very well.
